The Slowhand Sessions I- The Allman Brothers

Do me a favor, play this and then read

1970- Eric Clapton was yet again involved in another "super group"

now as folklore has it, there are various stories behind the name of the group,"Derek and the Dominoes"

I'm partial to this one, shortly after the Clapton is God photo (google it)

EC wanted to play small venues but became God

and seeing as God is pretty hard to hide, EC took on the alias Derek so he could continue to play smaller venues

so, "Derek" and the Dominoes set out to record an album

Clapton has free rein and chooses songs he's always wanted to cover mixed with songs he writes

Tom Dowd was the producer of that album and was also the producer for the Allman Brothers

on night off, Dowd brings Clapton and crew to come see the Allman Bros Band

this is from wikipedia- the first meeting between Duane Allman (which if you don't know him, look into him) and EC
Duane was in the middle of a solo; he opens his eyes and looks down, does a dead stare, and stops playing. Dickey Betts is chugging along, see Duane's stopped playing, and figures he'd better cover, that Duane must've broken a string or something. Then Dickey looks down, sees Eric, and turns his back. That was how they first saw each other.[9]
Formal introductions were made after the show. Eric invited the entire band to Criteria Studios for a jam. After the concert was over, they all came back to the studio and jammed until approximately 6:00 the next night, Dowd remembered. "They were trading licks. They were swapping guitars. They were talking shop and information and having a ball no holds barred, just admiration for each other's technique and facility. There was no control. We turned the tapes on and they went on for 15 to 18 hours like that. You just kept the machines rolling. I went through two or three sets of engineers. It was a wonderful experience."[

Clapton invited Duane to join the Dominoes but Duane declined out of loyalty to his own family band

Duane however lent his skills to the tracks on the album and wrote the guitar intro to Laya

one of the other songs on the album is my 4th favorite Clapton song, "Why Does Love Got to be So Sad."

1971-Duane Allman dies in a motorcycle accident

Clapton begins to spiral down with a heroin addiction

1974-Yours truly is born and Ec kicks his habit

1979- Derek Trucks is born

although not an Allman, Trucks is related to a founded member of the Allman Brothers Band

his name came from Eric's alias

he studied the greats and grew up listening to legends

1999- Derek Trucks is made an official member of the Allman Brothers Band

2007- Clapton invites Derek to tour with him, including a stop during the Crossroads festival where they performed, "Why Does Love Got to be So Sad."

sadly it was not included in the final DVD as the audio cut out of Clapton's guitar toward the end

it's still a jewel tho

enjoy

p.s. Derek is the cat with the long blonde hair
